Let's keep this simple. My "best bang for the buck" system (in a Scion XB):Panasonic HU, Polk Audio DB401 4" in the dash, Polk Audio DB651 6.5" in the doors.
MTX TE801D (800 watts @ 2-ohms mono bridged, underrated), 2 Alpine Type R SWR-1223D 2-ohm DVC (wired at 2-ohms mono), these 2 Atrend E12Sv B Box Series boxes, stuffed with 1 pound of Polyfill each, as suggested. I bought these boxes to replace the tiny sealed boxes I had these subs in before.
Both boxes fit perfectly in the back of my Scion, I have them facing upwards. Mind you, I haven't broken the subs in fully (I've played them for only a few hours). I installed the subs into the boxes today, hooked them up, and went for a little drive. Mother of G*d.
Let's backtrack a little. Prior to purchasing the Alpines, I had 2 MTX 8000s in the same tiny sealed boxes. I had stuffed those with about 3/4 of a pound of Polyfill. Now, the 8000s sounded decent in those boxes, but I felt it wasn't loud enough for my liking, but enough for the average listener. So I purchased the Alpines, noticed an improvement in both sound quality and sound pressure level (loudness). Even though they were in boxes that might've been too small, I felt the stuffing them made quite a difference. Bass was very tight and punchy. It was plenty loud, but again, after everything I'v read about these subs, I knew ported was the way to go. And so I ordered the Atrend boxes. And man.... what a HUGE difference.
Nevermind those stupid YouTube videos about how the subs make the body of the car flex. My car is a Scion XB, a toaster. Cheaply built. I could probably burp loud enough to make the car flex. And for whatever reason, the right rear panel flexes so bad you can hear it in the cabin, loud enough that some notes may sound like distortion. In other words, those videos really don't mean much.
Now, let me tell you about my 15 minute drive. I drove to a local shopping center parking lot, and cranked up Jay-Z and Kanye's "Welcome to The Jungle" from the "Watch The Throne" album. Maybe it was just coincidence, but a car alarm went off, about 20 feet away from where I was parked. My doors and windows were closed.
Drove off, drove by a local dog park, had the windows down, cranked DJ Laz's "Can U Feel It?" (you need to download this song NOW), was driving about 40 mph and managed to set a car's alarm off that was parked about 4 lanes away ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE ROAD! That's impressive to me.
Anyway, for someone who doesn't have time to wait for custom boxes or installations, this has been the perfect solution for me. These subs in these boxes provide probably more than enough bass for me. I'm talking about the bass is so loud, any more bass could qualify me for some kind of SPL competition (not what I'm looking to do). Honestly, I could get away with half this system and be satisfied. If you're looking for the perfect sub/box combo, look no further! *One last tip, the prices on these boxes fluctuate almost daily. I purchased mine from this seller for $31.92 + $15.62 each for shipping. Keep this in mind when buying. Any questions, please feel free to ask, and give a thumbs up if I've helped with my review :)
