I've enjoyed and appreciated the Surco luggage rack on a '91 Miata for the last 18 months. Purchased used (on Craigslist, from another city, from another Miata-phile), the product was very reasonably priced, and the construction quality is excellent. The product is custom-sized to fit the deck lid along the edges, without any direct contact onto the fairly flimsy center of the trunk deck. The original pads underneath the feet were hard plastic, and I had concerns that the "cushion" might scratch or dent the soft, aluminium "boot" lid, so I augmented the under-foot cushions with soft rubber from an old bicycle tyre. VAST improvement. Huge.
Likewise, the chrome, screw-down, locking bars needed a protective cushion around the edge (lip) of the trunk, to avoid either crushing or scratching the aluminium. The first time, there's a bit of twiddling about, getting things center, screwed sufficiently without squeezage, and generally "Ship-shape and Bristol Fashion." (Navy persons'll know what << that's about.)
The tubing is immensely strong, easily able to support far more than the recommended load. (That's either 40 pounds or 75 pounds, depending whose specification sheet you believe.) The spacing of the side-to-side bars is a bit odd. There's seemingly one missing, "dead center", but the designers knew what they were about. With a soft blanket above the deck lid, and beneath the luggage rack, that spot in the middle serves as a great anchor point for "what-eeevvvvvvverrrr" (Said in Valley-gurl voice.)
The rack isn't good just for toting to the airport and back. It served admirably for a 2-week camping trip, carrying sleeping bag, tent, blankets, ground cloths, hiking poles and whatever else was "lengthy, but light". It's carried 2 chairs of a 5-piece dinette, with the roll bar serving to anchor the table and another chair. It's served as a "spare carrier", in the fashion of the MG and Triumph design, where the spare was always carried up in the air.
Marvelous purchase!
Lay in a good supply of 8-10 foot long nylon tie straps. Keep 'em in the center of the spare (you didn't relo the spare to the undercarriage, did you?) DO NOT get the kind with a winch that can knock about and damage the paint or dent the deck. Get the kind with small, D-ring attachments or the VERY small, VERY light tiebacks that won't damage anything they touch. Get at least 8 straps, at least 8 feet long.
I also like the way it looks, not just the way it works. On the Chrystal White '91, the door handles and daisies are the only accents off the body paint. The rear rack's chrome adds just the right accent. The effect's even better on a 1995 (Dark) Montego Blue Mica. The highlights are fan-TAS-tic, in my view. Do recall, please, the Miata improves Brit roadsters, all of which sported a chromed, rear rack. Honor to one's elders DEMANDS we pay homage to the trunk rack.
When I find a second at the right price, I'll buy a second rack for the second car. Until then, I'll "make do" with one.
Did I mention I really like the product? Well, I do...
