Mickey Thompson Baja STZ Radial - 265/75R16 116T Review

Since I've lived in Alice Springs for the last 23 years I've tried a lot of different tyres for my bush work, driving 600,000km over vast areas and a multitude of conditions including all but one of our deserts. I've personally found that "desert duellers", for instance, are no such thing, and by any number of others passing through here, that many Cooper's tyres fall well short of the advertising hype, especially with the rubber compound. Worse, when something does go wrong they trot out a pre-prepared list to try and blame it on the customer and their famous "guarantee" is virtually ignored.

So it was with trepidation that I looked at Mickey Thomson's for my Prado after I discovered that they were made in the Cooper's factory in the U.S. Anyway, I'd always thought of Mickey Thomson's as "pretty boy, city boy's" tyres. Lately I've run BFG mud terrain T/A s on my troopcarrier and have been very impressed, but that vehicle does more dedicated hard slog work, for the Prado I wanted a compromise AT tyre. I looked at BFGs but the company in Australia were totally disorganized with 600 of the Prado size tyres I wanted on back order from the U.S. and still weeks away. I was seriously upset as tyre choices are far more important to you here than in the city. As I was due for a vehicle inspection that the old tyres wouldn't pass, then immediately followed by a serious desert trip, I had to think quick. You can't always get tyres off the shelf here in Alice, it can take several days to get what you want up from Adelaide etc.

After a lot of research I decided on the Mickey Thomson Baja STZ for the Prado in the 265/65/17 size. They were a new model tyre and were literally being unloaded from the shipping container when I spoke to the guys in Adelaide about them. Well b#$%ger me! They were good, really good!

I didn't want to write a review too early but after my first 16,000km I am very impressed.

Of that 16,000, 3000 would be in and around town, 3000 on the highway constantly at 130 (or so) km/hr (we can do that here!) 10,000 off road on various jobs from the deserts down here to the Gulf and the Top End. Mud, sand, rock, corrugations, water crossings, high speed bitumen, nothing really phases them. I inspected the wear marks on the tyres again this morning and it is negligible. No cuts, no compound heat break up on the tread from constant high speed, sidewalls as smooth as a baby's bum. It still has the little rubber fingers sticking out as if its new. Now, remember it is winter here, but I was still getting 30+ degrees in the Gulf and Top End. Things can change with heat especially on bitumen and in sand, but my gut feeling is this tyre is not going to disappoint in the Summer. They are considerably cheaper than BFG equivalents but easily match them on performance. I might even go further in my next review post-Summer. I wanted to give it a 4 and a half coz nothing's perfect, but it only let me choose 4 or 5. But it's better than a 4, hence the rating!

If you are looking for an all terrain compromise tyre for your 4wd, when you combine value and performance, I am yet to find better than the Mickey Thomson Baja STZ.
