Rubicon Express RE1461 5.5" Leaf Spring for HD Jeep XJ Review

I purchased an original set of RE1461's in 2004. They had 5 spring leaves. I live in Colorado and I used the springs all over this state over many of the known trails. They even put up with the abuse my 4.7L stroker adds with its' extra torque. I replaced the spring eye bushings in 2010 though it probably was due in 2008. They lasted until September 2012 when 2 of the left spring leaves sheared somewhere along Italian Creek or Pearl Pass. I'm not confident exactly where it happened because we didnt' notice the problem until we were in Crested Butte coming out of the grocery, and I noticed the "lean". It kinda cancelled the Shofield/Crystal River leg of the trip! We live near Denver, so we had quite a haul home. The jeep drove like it didn't even know the spring was broken over several mountain passes.

I had already been planning to replace these springs with an Alcan or similar custom spring, but they are very expensive. These springs have more leaves in them to improve the ride quality of the spring, as well as longer leaves to make the springs last longer. I've been throwing some ideas around for changes to the suspension in the rear, and am not ready to commit to an expensive custom spring, but I needed the Jeep to be drivable, so I ordered a new RE-1461. Much to my suprise when it arrived, it has been greatly improved. There are 8 leaves now, and they are longer, which are both improvements the product needed though they already had proved their grit after years of flawless service. Now I need one more to make them equal!

While the new spring is young, and obiously comes from a different manufacturer. Regardless of it's source, it appears to be a quality product. I am anxious to see how these really perform in the months to come. In a world where most manufacturers are reducing quality and cutting corners on their products, it is very refreshing to see intelligent improvemements to an already great product.
