Product Description

The 57 Series Generation II air intake, also referred to as an FIPK, is K&N's ultimate performance product. These performance intakes are designed to increase power by as much as 10%. 57 Series FIPK's are CARB exempt, street legal in all 50 US states, come with K&N's Million Mile Limited Warranty and are guaranteed to increase power. K&N air intake systems replace your vehicle's restrictive factory air filter and air intake housing. K&N intakes are designed to dramatically reduce intake restriction as they smooth and straighten air flow. This translates into more power and torque for your vehicle. The filters on these kits are washable and reusable. Most of our air intake systems are relatively easy to install using tools commonly available.

K&N 57-1001 FIPK Performance Air Intake System Review

After installing this filter in my E46 330ci (2002) and driving it for the past week or so, I'd generally agree with the prior reviewer. A couple of observations:

For me, installation was closer to the 90 minutes stated by the manufacturer or maybe a bit more, slowed by the step of threading the foam trim around the often-awkward angles of the heat shield, and the lack of a couple of the hardware pieces that were supposed to be included (a nut and a couple of washers were missing, the latter of which turned up later). The instructions also call for a bolt size (3MM) that is different from the ones included (10MM), though the different-sized bolts still worked fine. I would have found a 10 mm deep socket to be very useful. Another tip: one of the angles in the heat shield was just too difficult to get the trim to follow, so I snipped the trim and placed that piece separately, and it worked fine. Unlike the prior reviewer, my trim was exactly the right length.

Despite these difficulties (which are easy to get around), the instructions were actually quite clear and easy to follow, with photographs of each step that were very helpful for non-gearheads like me who haven't spent a lot of time under the hood in awhile. K & N did their homework in designing and sizing all of the parts, which dropped right into their intended places and hooked up exactly as intended into the space left by the stock parts. I kept waiting to run into the part that wouldn't fit, but in my car, I never did.

This is not a turbocharger, so don't expect a dramatic difference in performance. BMW tunes cars pretty well right out of the box, and it's not like the stock engine is air-starved. However, this filter definitely offers lower restriction, and there does seem to be some gain in horsepower in the mid/upper RPMs. The difference would probably be more dramatic if I had also made changes to the fuel system and software. Even though the HP/torque gains are not very large (I think they claim 11 HP, which is unlikely), you can definitely hear the difference when you lay into the accelerator. It's not really much louder inside the car, but it does sound better.

Overall, for a car that is notoriously expensive to modify, this was $235 that was pretty well-spent. I know that the actual performance gains aren't that large, but my car is more fun: at the end of the day, why else does anyone drop the cash on these cars to begin with? I know there are more expensive filters out there and endless debates over brands, but I honestly doubt that any of the good brands (K & N, Dinan, etc.) have that much of an edge over one another on a part like this. If you like to tinker with your car some and have a little extra cash, this isn't a bad way to go.
