We bought these chains for our 2004 BMW X3. We leave near San Diego but we go to the mountains (Big Bear and Mammoth) quite a bit: I still decided winter tires was not our best option so I was looking for some high quality chains to use on regular summer & all season tires. My main concern is that in California, CalTrans or CHP can mandate to install chains and often this is done prior to hit the actual snow so there are good chances that you'll be driving on regular pavement for some time: this can shorten the life of chains significantly.

These Thule XD16 chains have a 16mm chain link which not only provides exceptional traction, but significantly extends the life of the chains. As for every chains I recommend trying them in the comfort of your garage and familiarize with the installation procedure. It is not complicated, but giving it a try ahead of time will reduce chances of having problems when you actually need them. The instruction are "Ikea Style" so not some might find them unclear, but if you had experience with LEGOs when you were in your glorious days, you will navigate through them very easily. The quality of the construction is up to Thule standards.

Because of the heavy duty links, it does requires a greater clearance: specifically Thule recommends 16mm clearance between the wheels and any car part. Or X3 mounts the standard 235/55-17 tires while the rims are 17x8 with an offset of 46mm. With these specs the chains fit perfectly on the rear (where BMW recommends to mount chains) and still have roughly 10mm clearance with the closer component. I haven't try whether they fit in the front or not, but for extreme conditions I carry another set of chains for the front that have a lower clearance requirement so I don't anticipate ever having to fit them in the front. However please not that the front is not as generous as the rear is. These are designed for SUV and trucks: passenger cars might have tighter clearances so they might not fit. Make sure you do your due diligence.

I am definitely satisfied of the purchase, and I will report back once I try them more extensively in the snow.
