The Heininger Advantage SportsRack glideAWAY2 Deluxe 4 Bike Carrier is a rear-oriented bike carrier for vehicles utilizing hitch receivers. It allows full access to the rear interior of the vehicle without having to remove the bikes or the carrier. Designed around an accordion style folding mechanism, the glideAWAY2 deluxe can extend up to 23 inches away from its locked position next to the vehicle. This makes it perfect for use with hatchbacks. It can also swivel either left or right when extended, allowing for even more space to reach cargo. The glideAWAY2 utilizes an anti-wobble device and an adapter to fit both 2-inch and 1.25-inch hitch receiver sizes. The glideAWAY2 deluxe four bike carrier eliminates the agony and irritation often experienced with other rear mounted carriers when having to take your bikes off every time you want access to your vehicle from the back. It is designed to hold up to four bicycles with 1-2 inch top frame tubes. I was initially pleased with this when it arrived. Looked sturdy and seemed like just what I wanted. The rack folds down and out of way giving a nice clean look when you aren't using the rack. The pull out function is great since it lets you get into your car with removing the bikes. Great innovation. However, it was missing the pins that attached the actual rack to the fold away part and the rubber straps that attached the bikes to the rack. Heininger Customer service was excellent and took care of both quickly and efficiently.

When we were finally able to actually use the rack we found that the bars for the bikes are too close together for a woman's bike to fit (except at a really crazy angle) and I had to purchase a cross-bar for the wife's bike to work. The catastrophic failure occurred when the strap on one bike (mine - male bike) failed at highway speeds. Needless to say, the bike came off the rack, front wheel off the bike (bent all to hell) and I still have no idea what it's going to cost to repair my bike. This wasn't a cheap bike either - it's a nearly $1K Canondale that I've only had a couple of months.

There is nothing in the instructions (downloaded and reviewed before posting this) that indicates that you should add more tie-downs to your bikes when using it as advertised. The instructions do say you should take the straps off when not in use, though.
