Dorman 674-959 Manifold Converter Review

Bought this part because it was cheaper than the auto store. Tried to get it to fit the 2005 2.5L and it just frustrated me. First, the included heat shield only covers half of the back of the converter. But, you can't even use it anyways because the shield doesn't clear a pipe in front of the engine. I couldn't get it to seat correctly on the engine. So, I tried to modify the heat shield and still, after several attempts, could not get it to work. I tried to install the part without the back shield and while it will seat, the bottom bolt (at the tip of the converter that stabilizes the converter to the car) does not match up. So, in order for this part to fit I have to

1. Mould the included heat shield somehow to clear the engine area.
2. Remove the bottom bolt bar and enlarge the hole a bit for the bolt to line up with the converter hole
3. Drive it without the converter fully shielded in the back

Needless to say this is not my idea of direct fit. Not sure why they only have half a shield..not even sure if you should drive the car without it. But, as a plus, the original front shields will bolt on this. I had no problems with that. However, the part is sitting on the floor because I can't get the thing to fit like it should. BTW, the original back shield will not fit--it will attach but juts out too far to allow for snug fit on the engine.

I really wanted to love this part..but just can't recommend it. On another note, when it arrived the bolt kit was a different part #. I contacted Dorman to ask about it and they said the bolt kits are the same for two versions.. I did use the bolts and they fit fine. However, I had to buy a new flange gasket because the included one did not fit my new main cat (eastern catalytic).

Update: Found a shop that will cut the heat shield for us for $10. Going to remove a portion of the one corner and see if we can get it to work. Encouraged by the other reviewer who did the same and was able to mount and run with no problems. I hope it works! This SAME converter is priced at autozone for $400+, so really happy to get it half priced at Amazon. I also bought 2 new Bosch O2 sensors, serpentine belt, a right front motor mount (since I had to remove all the parts to get to the converter might as well change out the damaged mount, too) and an eastern catalytic main converter (the one under the car--but bought that on another site).
