Cargo Cover Scion xB 2008-2012 Genuine Toyota New Review

When we first purchased this Scion XB, it was the first hatchback we had ever owned and I don't even remember an option for a cargo cover. It immediately became a problem to conceal valuables in the back of the car and we resorted to a plastic trunk for the first couple of years. When I started searching for a cargo cover, I came across this product and most of the reviews stressed the difficulty of installing this cover. I strongly agree. I work in the IT field by trade and am not much of a handyman. I probably would NOT have taken on this project when this vehicle was brand new because I wouldn't have been able to bear the thought of drilling into the interior of the car and possibly making a mistake.

The instructions that come with this kit leave a lot to be desired. They should have included a link to a Youtube video to clarify the installation instructions. The entire purpose of this project is to install a left and right side bracket in the back of the vehicle to support the privacy cargo cover I would say it took me about 4-5 hours to disassemble the back side of the vehicle, interpret the instructions, understand where to place the paper templates and gather up enough nerve to drill the appropriate holes. After the left side was properly installed, it probably took me about 20 minutes to complete the right side since I now understood where the templates were to be placed and had the confidence to drill the holes.

If Amazon provided me a way to post some photos, I would, because as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Here are some tips that if were available to me before probably would have saved me a couple of hours of time.

Hole Saw: The instructions call for a 40mm hole saw. I went to Lowes and found that they carry very few metric drillbits but they do have metric measurements in hole saws. Lowes had a 38mm and a 41mm hole saw. I debated on which size to get. I decided to go with the 38mm size thinking that I would just ream out the hole with a file if I needed it larger. However, I found that the 38mm hole saw provided a hole much larger than was really needed anyway so 38mm was really just perfect.

Drill bit size: I needed a 6mm drillbit but this size is not critical and I believe I used a 15/64 drillbit with no problem.

Paper templates: I spent a long time trying to understand what was being referred to by aligning the pattern paper up with the "upper flange". If you pull back the deck side trim and separate the paper pattern provided into its 2 parts, if you place the paper pattern along the upper edge of the deck side trim, it should become somewhat obvious where the paper template should be taped on before the holes are drilled. The smaller paper template is more obvious because of the triangular pointed edge that fits neatly atop the "upper flange"

Claws & Clips: The instructions refer to disengaging several claws and clips. At first this did not seem very obvious but they do seem to pop off and go back on easily enough.

When it was all said and done, the back of the vehicle and the cargo cover look as if it was purchased that way. There is nothing to indicate that this was an afterthought and the parts come in a Toyota box. In fact, there are pre-drilled holes already in the vehicle frame where the brackets screw into that indicate the vehicle was already designed for this cargo cover. What I don't understand is why the deck side trim did not already have these 38mm holes as they could have been easily designed with removable plugs so as to make the installation easier at a later time.

I'm glad I installed it. It gave me a great sense of accomplishment. I hope these notes will help someone else.
